Abstract: The practical measurement of leaf area of vines (Vitis vinifera L.) under field conditions is necessary to establish its relation with growth and yield, especially in the evaluation of field experiments. At Cauquenes, Chile (35°57’ S, 72°19’ W), in the 1993/94 season, a trial was conducted to determine the variables that best estimated the foliage area of vine leaves. The products of multiplying maximum length x maximum width for the shoot leaves and length between leaf apex and petiolar point x width between points of the superior lobules for the leaves of lateral shoots yielded the best linear mathematical indicators. RESUMEN La medición simple de variables que permitan medir el área foliar en vides (Vitis vinifera L.) forma práctica bajo condiciones de campo, es necesaria para establecer su relación con el crecimiento y producción. En la temporada 1993/94 en el área de Cauquenes, Chile (35º57´ S, 72º19´W) se realizó un ensayo para determinar las variables que mejor estimaran el área foliar, en hojas de brotes y feminelas, en vides cv. Chardonnay. Los productos de largo máximo (LM) x ancho máximo (AM) para hojas de brotes y de largo entre el mucrón y el punto peciolar (LP) x ancho máximo (AM) para hojas de feminelas presentaron los mejores indicadores de relación matemática.
