Anthropology is concerned with human diversity and commonality over time and across geographical space. It is the broadest of the social sciences, stretching from the life sciences to the humanities.

The Department of Anthropology was established in 1936 and its faculty has consistently included distinguished anthropologists of international renown. Members of the department conduct research on present and past human societies, cultural knowledge and practice, human health and nutrition, evolutionary antecedents of humans, and closely related species.

The department offers graduate training in socio-cultural, linguistic, medical, biological, and archaeological branches of the field with an emphasis, at the doctoral level, on empirical research and long-term fieldwork.
