East Asia is home to almost a quarter of the world's population and accounts for a fifth of its economic activity. Chinese, by a large margin, is the most widely spoken language on Earth. But its size and economic standing are by no means the only reasons for studying the region. Few areas of the world combine the length of history and the contemporary dynamism of East Asia. Home to one of the world's oldest, richest and most diverse stores of cultural expression, East Asia plays a crucial role in shaping world culture—today as it has for centuries past.

The Department of East Asian Studies offers students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the histories, cultures, and societies of this fascinating and critically important part of the world.
