The Department of Geology offers expertise in Earth and planetary materials, geodynamics, sedimentary geology, environmental geoscience and geobiology. Faculty in the department conduct field-based research on both land and sea throughout the world, as well as experimental studies of rock-forming processes, meteoritics and theoretical modeling.

The department and its members maintain several facilities in support of their research,including mass spectrometry laboratories for stable and radiogenic isotope analysis, state-of-the-art XRF and XRD, newly upgraded electron microprobe and SEM, apparatus for high pressure/temperature experimentationas well as laser albation ICP-MS.
