The Department of Art at the St. George campus offers Graduate and Undergraduate degrees in Visual Studies and in the History of Art. Founded in 1935, it was the first model for such department at a Canadian university and over seven decades has achieved an international reputation for scholarly and creative excellence.

The art history program is devoted to investigating the ways in which individuals (celebrated or unknown) and whole civilizations have expressed themselves through the ages in architecture and town planning, in painting and sculpture, and in printmaking, photography, and the various arts of design.
