Title: Hoping and coping: South Asian immigrant mothers perceptions of disability

Abstract: Purpose: To describe perceptions of disability among South Asian immigrant mothers of children with disabilities in Toronto, Canada and explore how these perceptions influence notions of pediatric physiotherapy. Methods: Descriptive qualitative research methods were employed. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with South Asian mothers whose children were receiving services at a local children s rehabilitation centre. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed, and data was coded and analyzed to identify themes. Results: Three themes emerged: 1) Mothers coping mechanisms, hopes and fears are influenced by a variety of cultural factors; 2) Mothers experience physical, emotional and social suffering related to socio-culturally embedded perspectives of disability and available supports, and 3) Mothers seek out physiotherapy in the hopes of minimizing their child s physical impairments and achieving normal as represented by walking. Conclusion: South Asian immigrant mothers perceptions of their child s disability are influenced by both traditional cultural notions of disability, as well as those imposed on mothers through institutional and societal norms. In order to help mothers achieve a positive and realistic frame of reference for their child s disability, physiotherapists need to play an important role in advocating for access to social supports and helping mothers set achievable goals for their child.
