Description: Shand discusses her 25-year involvement with the International Society for Music Education (ISME), looking back at several ISME conference presentations that put her in a unique position to introduce various Canadian musical projects (such as the John Adaskin Project) to the international community. She is a leader in teacher education and served an eight-year term as commissioner of the ISME Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC), a demanding position which saw her organize conferences and publications and expand and foster her international connections – crucial elements of her leadership among music educators around the world. She emphasizes the importance of her ISME participation in her personal and professional development, and encourages all music educators to join the ISME organization and involve themselves in its activities.
