The Department of Molecular Genetics traces its roots back to the Department of Medical Cell Biology which was founded in 1969 under its first Chair, Dr. Lou Siminovitch. The Department's major strength is its diverse Faculty who run a remarkable variety of world-class research programs in areas ranging from molecular microbiology and model organism genetics to human genetics.

The Faculty have made widely recognized contributions in a variety of research areas and have been the recipients of numerous national and international awards. As a Department, its major focus is on undergraduate and graduate training. Graduates from its program regularly gain postdoctoral positions in prestigious laboratories and staff positions in major universities, research institutes and industry.
