The Department of Sociology's primary areas of expertise and research focus are: immigration and ethnic relations, health and mental health, networks and community, gender and family, crime and socio-legal studies, stratification, work, and labour markets and political sociology.

Strength in theory and methods are considered as fundamental responsibilities of the department. In addition, the department has developing strengths in the sociology of culture, social policy, existing strengths in social demography, life course and aging, and a long-term continuing strength in urban sociology.
