Recent Submissions

4.8 mm wide cavities. Hylaeus nest.

4.8 mm wide cavities. The Masked Bee Hylaeus is wasp-like. Nectar and pollen are brought to the nest in its crop and the provisions and egg sealed in a bubble of 'bee cellophane'. A fugitive species.

4.8 mm wide cavities. The resin-using Aphid Wasp Passaloecus. Aphids at the bottom, a mixture of prepupae and pupae at the top. The prepupa is a larval skin with the pupa inside. The pupa is like the adult but lacks colour and wing inflation.

4.8 mm wide cavities. Potter Wasp, Symmorphus cristatus. Acrylic lidded nest block.

4.8 mm wide cavities. Hylaeus pupae well pigmented but not yet emerged. When Hylaeus nests in wider cavities cells may be built side by side, rather than in a linear row, as is the general rule for cavity-using bees and wasps.
