Abstract: "This paper provides a preliminary overview of Buddhism... in the context of metropolitan Toronto and vicinity, with 30 centres representing the varieties of world Buddhism and congregations of various backgrounds... The paper concludes that there is a heterogeneous but balanced growth of Buddhism in Toronto in terms of the Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan varieties of Mahayana Buddhism and of Theravada Buddhism; and that Buddhism is taking root as reflected in the fact that there are now Buddhist teachers and entire congregations of non-immigrant/native background, providing a first base of tolerance."
