Abstract: What was the purpose of Schools We Need? Following the most tumultuous decade in Ontario educational history, and seven years after the release of the report of the Royal Commission on Learning, it seemed time to examine where Ontario education is now and where the province should be headed in the future. The Schools We Need provided an audit of current education policy in Ontario with suggestions on how to improve our schools. We argued in that report that the future for public schools in Ontario is at risk – student achievement has stalled, teachers and principals are demoralized, and the funding formula is not working.
