Abstract: Magnetic resonance (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice in most disorders that affect the pediatric brain. The abnormal development of the brain is responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality in the preterm and term newborn. Brain development is characterized by morphological changes, histogenesis and myelination. Imaging plays an important role in the timing of in utero insults of the central nervous system. Intrauterine or postnatal MRI findings on the developing brain have an impact on defining prognosis and directing therapy to prevent or reduce irreversible sequelae of fetal or perinatal brain injury. Due to its sensibility to tissue changes, MRI is the imaging method of choice to evaluate brain maturation. Multi-planar capabilities, excellent graywhite matter contrast resolution, and lack of ionizing radiation are some of the major attributes of MR imaging.
