Title: VPAC80 opera: Rossini, Barber of Seville
Authors: Clark, Caryl
Keywords: opera analysis
Barber of Seville
comic opera
opera in multimedia
Issue Date: 21-Jan-2004
Abstract: This collaborative CD-ROM project on Rossini's Barber of Seville uses the potential of multimedia to the analysis of opera. By recognizing opera's audio, visual, and perfomative and dramatic aspects. It analyses individual scenes, parses the libretto, analyses the score and incorporates examples of digitized sound to corresponding visual excerpts from the score and relevant scenic material. A glossary of terms, bibliography and external internet links are attached. Students have taken on the role of opera "designers" in determining the content and "look" of their respective sites. In linking textual discussion of the libretto with description of dramatic action, characterization, instrumentation etc., they have engaged the dramatic potential of the medium more than they would have in a traditional linear analytical essay.
