Abstract: This article introduces and locates the World Council of Churches’ initiative, “Ecumenical Decade to Overcome Violence,” from 2001-2010, in the context of the 1998 Harare Assembly and two of its events, the new ecumenical charter document, “Towards a Common Understanding and Vision” and the recommendations adapted in response to the pre-Assembly Festival that closed the 1988-98 Ecumenical Decade of the Churches in Solidarity with Women.
