PREFATORY NOTE

The student should familiarize himself with each selection before it is taken up in class, and should consult the notes thereon. The latter are intended to relieve him of the need of using books of reference; but, apart from a few exceptional cases, difficulties which may be solved by a thoughtful consideration of the text are not explained. In general also, all critical comment has been excluded; to develop the student's appreciation of the poems is the special function of the class-work.
