Short poem

Adelaide Crapsey (1878-1914)

The Lonely Death

              1In the cold I will rise, I will bathe
              2In waters of ice; myself
              3Will shiver, and shrive myself,
              4Alone in the dawn, and anoint
              5Forehead and feet and hands;
              6I will shutter the windows from light,
              7I will place in their sockets the four
              8Tall candles and set them a-flame
              9In the grey of the dawn; and myself
            10Will lay myself straight in my bed,
            11And draw the sheet under my chin.
